The Heat

There is something about going from that soft coolness of spring to the throws of summer heat, that just causes everything to spin out of control.

You don’t sleep well, you’re hot, cranky…the kids are the same, your plants are cranky too and some shriveling before they were even given a chance.

Friday was one of those days – a last ditch effort to hold onto spring, while summer pushes his way in. He can be quite a bully like his brother, old man winter. This weekend was full of all sorts of goodness though and sadly, I didn’t pick up my camera once, because I was just so busy.

We ripped up more of the garden and planted our seedlings. I attended my dear cousin’s bridal shower and we played lots in the back yard. Little Magoo got a hold of the hose and we had a full on water fight. Man, it was fun…and cold, but that good cold that bites you real quick, causes you to screech and then you are looking for more, because it is so darn hot out. We got out the kiddie pool, and beach ball sprinkler and enjoyed a picnic. It was pure goodness.

I really didn’t want this weekend to end. Just a taste of hopefully what summer holds!

Making Your Mark

You wouldn’t think that prolific thoughts would flood your mind while making cookies, but that is what happened to me today. Little Magoo decided he wanted to make cookies, so this afternoon we did just that. My grandmother was known in the family for her chocolate chip Toll House cookies. Everyone loved them and no one could ever quite match her recipe.

I decided to try a different recipe today than I had tried the last time I made cookies. Sure enough I ran out of one ingredient and had to substitute with a now secret ingredient and tweaked things a bit.

Why a secret ingredient? Because let me tell you – these cookies were out of this world. That is when it really hit me how much we need to make our own marks in this world. The recipes we give to our children and grandchildren will never be the same…but it is up to them to tweak things and build on what we have given them…to make their own marks on the world…to make the world a sweeter place in their own way, because we all have something special to give. It is just all about finding that perfect recipe to make it shine in our own way.

When we find that special spot, the world seems more at peace.

Doors open, that we never knew existed.

All because of what we individually bring to the table.

It is about trusting in yourself.

Trusting your capabilities.

And remembering….

Anything is possible.

Drip Drop, The Rain it Would Not Stop

I feel like I haven’t posted here in forever! Seriously! Ugh. I hate having lulls in creativity or in writing…I really do, it is truly a part of who I am, but I can’t force it.

It is beginning to feel a lot like the spring of last year, when it just rained and rained and rained and it seemed as if we were about to be carried away in arks. We have pretty much been stuck indoors…thankfully it has not been pouring out so going out and about in the car isn’t so bad.

(the lilacs are in bloom, one of my favorite flowers)

Speaking of cars…I killed my battery. Like…I was trying to get those kiddie shades up on my car while the littles napped and Mr. Magoo had called me and the keys were in my ignition, but the car was not running…just “on” for the interior. Yeah, left them there and went inside and about my business, until suddenly I realized where my keys were. We managed to get a jump…but today the battery needed replacing. Ooops! I guess we can’t complain, it was the original 2003 battery, which was purchased in 2002. (Go Toyota!)

Take a gander at what my anniversary gift is…yup. Speaking on our anniversary – Mr. Magoo and I will be married 5 years this Friday. I can’t believe it! He’s my best friend though and I am so glad to be married to him and I can’t wait to celebrate with him. Oh, how our lives have changed over the past 5 years and it has been such a wild ride – I am so glad to walk through life with him.

Life grows.

And grows….and then when you get your lovely little seedling babies outside, some little critter takes a chomp out of your sunflowers that were nice and healthy. Yes, my little babies are outside now in this dreary weather…I hope they make it…if not…well, there is always next year to look forward to.

Mrs. Magoo, over and out!

Pocket of Sunshine

It has been nothing but dreary and cool all week it seems. I like dreary and cool though. It gives me an excuse to stay inside and try to get some housework done. I say try, because inevitable, I get sidetracked by trying to stop Pooks from climbing on something, or someone is asking for a snack or I need to prepare a meal. I’ve managed to wash a few windows though, get some laundry put away and get some clothing and shoes bagged up to donate. I can’t help it though, this weather makes me slow and sleepy…I have utterly been exhausted these past two days.

Getting outside is nearly impossible too, besides the weather, as the black flies are on the hunt and we only lasted a minute outside the other day.

I’ve managed though to start the process of hardening off my seedlings. I really am sick of my house smelling like dirt and fertilizer. It makes me really wish I had a potting shed and greenhouse. Just a little one. That’s not asking for much, is it?

They seem to enjoy being outside. Let’s hope they survive.

I can’t get enough of this little stinker right now though. He has started this thing when he nurses…he will nurse, come away, put his hand behind my neck and pull me close for a kiss…then go back to nursing. How sweet is that? He is a stinker.

Little Magoo has been saying the funniest things too. He knows he’s funny to boot. How I’d love to curl up with the two of them and take a nice nap together. I love them, truly.

My House Smells Like Dirt

No, really, it does…it’s overwhelming as my overabundance of seedlings get re-potted and wait and wait for our last frost, to be planted in the garden. I honestly never expected all of the seeds I planted to take…like ALL of them. Oops! Probably because I had no clue I had a green thumb. Our dining room is over-crowded.

I’ve been giving away my seedlings here and there and I can’t help but be a little sad to see them go. Months of nurturing and a part of me feels badly for giving them to friends and family…it’s like setting your children off into the world on their own. How sad is that, that I am so attached to these little babies?

This weekend was goodness and yesterday we celebrated Mother’s Day. I was just happy to be with family and enjoy the day. I hated to see Monday come.

I have no clue what this week will bring…endless possibilities. I’ve been slacking on my exercising for sure. The last time I exercised was three weeks ago. Not good. I went for a run in the rain while Mr. Magoo was on vacation. It felt good…I didn’t even make a mile, but I tried again, I really want to be able to do it…but there was an issue. My knees. They are not made for running. I don’t know what I did, but the whole inside of both of my knees were hurting so badly it was painful to walk down stairs. Runner’s knee? Perhaps. But I decided then and there I don’t want to risk knee injury and don’t think I will run again. Between ACL surgeries and Rheumatoid Arthritis in my family, I think I can do without running.

I will say though, that I realized my age at this point and the fact that two consecutive pregnancies really took it’s toll on my body. It’s going to take a lot of work to get my body back where it was or even close to what it was, physically. Hopefully I’ll get there slowly.

Hope you all have a great Monday!

Good Morning!

Oh my, it has been a while! Life always has a way of just getting busy.

Two weeks ago we were fortunate enough to have Mr. Magoo home on vacation. We did lots of errands and we worked hard on tearing up parts of our existing garden to make way for new plants – flowers, a butterfly bush, fruits, vegetables and herbs. It is still a work in progress but hopefully our efforts will pay off.

We have a couple of birdfeeders too in the garden, which the birds are enjoying and windchimes…I’m really loving it and look forward to spend more time out there in my piece of earth.

We have also all been plauged with headcolds these past two weeks and just not feeling our best. I have been busy purchasing frames and framing my photographs for a fine art show and I have been gathering things to start my photography business (Lisa Louise Photography). I’m hoping to get more into the world of portraiture – but we’ll see where it goes, my family comes first for sure and I may not be successful in the long run, but I’m OK with that…things will go the way they are supposed to either way.

This weekend we are looking forward to hanging out as a family, getting outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and hopefully working on the garden some more.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful mothers in this world!!

Peaks

Recently I blogged about how I am not a runner. Some of my old (not old in the sense that they are old, because they are far from that) college colleagues are though and barefoot run at that. Something I know I will never be interested in, but I do have to admit that after trying to run that first run of mine, it has peaked my interest.

I want to try to run again.

Yes, you read that right…me, all out of shape huffy puffy will try to run again. I am the type of person who, when given a challenge, will go for it, until I achieve some sort of final outcome, but I want to be able to do it, at least run a mile for sure. I’m crazy in that sense, that I want to be able to say I can do something.

I think back to when I was in college and one summer my oldest brother invited me to join him and one of his friends to climb Mt. Washington. You do know what Mt. Washington is, right? It is the highest peak mountain in the Northeast United States, known for it’s crazy weather (mind you we went in August and there was still snow on the mountain, even though it was 80 degrees at the base of the mountain) and high winds (I believe some of the highest wind gusts recorded). We climbed Tuckerman’s Ravine that day, THE toughest climb of the mountain…and a climber I am not…nor am I an extreme hiker. (We made it all the way to the summit, where I stood at the bottom of the stairs to the marker. “Go on”, I said to them, “I’m just going to stay here.” my legs felt like they were going to cave under me at any second. My brother’s friend started yelling at me to climb the stairs “Come on! you climbed all this way and you aren’t even going to make it to the official summit?!? Come on! You’re G.I. Jane!!” Oh man, it was funny.

I climbed on, up the most painful flight of stairs ever, my thighs burning the whole way. But I made it. And now I can officially say I have climbed Mt. Washington and conquered that mountain.

I guess that there is something to be said for that, I enjoy conquering “mountains”. I even see it in terms of my photography, where I want to reach my full potential some day and I guess in general that is what life is all about, conquering one mountain after another until you can say.

“That’s right, I climbed that mountain.”

Tuesday Dribblings

I know it is already Tuesday, but we had a pretty good weekend together this past weekend. Mr. Magoo and I took the kids to participate in the town Egg Hunt, it was a lot of fun to see them filled with such excitement.

Little Magoo ran into one of his little buddies there too and was totally happy to see him and tried making friends with the other kids there too. He cracks me up, as he always tries to hug kids he doesn’t even know! It used to be kissing his friends, but we put an end to that – “hugs and high-fives, buddy!” It is so endearing though to see him be so affectionate, I guess we show him a lot of love at home. :)

Yesterday I was busy transplanting some of our seedlings to larger pots, as almost all of the seeds I had started, have grown. I can’t believe it. I’ve never grown anything from seed.

It warms my heart. They are like my little babies, I check on them daily, look for new progress, feed them, make sure they are warm. I’m having fun with it…but I have so many seedlings, I really don’t know where they will all go! Pumpkins, peppers, cucumber, tomato, watermelon, strawberry…

…and we’ve got flowers too – marigold, daisy and sunflowers. It is all so exciting. I just pray I don’t see a tomato caterpillar. If you don’t know what those are, do not look them up on google, you’ll have nightmares. I warned you, that’s all I’m saying.

Have a happy Tuesday!
